On this first episode, we discuss the most important thing to teenagers, or to… everyone — Social Media.
Eli and I dive deep on our personal thoughts and opinions on it. The advantages and disadvantages of it. This topic is very important, and, we feel that hearing each other’s views on it is very empowering as a parent and as a teenager.
We hope you enjoy this and learn something or maybe makes you nod yes at times.
Ellen had a conversation with Tristan Harris, a former Google employee who is one of the prominent people in the hit Netflix documentary “The Social Dilemma.” The film takes a look at how social media companies are able to influence and manipulate its users. Tristan discussed how he went from being a Silicon Valley insider to becoming president of the Center for Humane Technology. He discussed his mission to re-align technology for the well-being of humanity, what parents should be aware of to help protect kids, and what solutions there are to stop addiction to social media.
When 15-year-old Madelynn was caught sneaking boys into an all-girls sleepover, her parents gave her two options for punishment: give up her phone for a month or give up her phone for two weeks and let her parents take total control of her social media accounts. Madelynn chose the second option, but after seeing the photos her folks posted for all her followers to see, she probably should have stuck with the month-long punishment.
