Trump, Zelensky Start Arguing On Social Media Just As Ukraine Leader Lands In USA| Putin| Russia War

On August 17, just hours before their high-stakes meeting in Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appeared to exchange a veiled war of words on social media. Trump suggested that Zelensky could end the war “almost immediately” if he chose to, reiterating his position that Ukraine cannot join NATO and recalling Crimea’s handover under the Obama administration. Zelensky, landing in Washington the same night, responded with a firm message blaming Russia as the sole instigator of the conflict. He underscored Ukraine’s determination to defend its independence, highlighted battlefield gains in Donetsk and Sumy, and stressed that peace must be lasting—not built on failed “guarantees” from the past. The face-off sets the stage for tense talks on August 18, where Trump will host Zelensky alongside European leaders in what could be a turning point in the pursuit of peace.

There are safety questions after the Outside Lands music festival, with hundreds of people taking to social media with concerns over crowd sizes.

“People were passing out left and right,” said one concertgoer. “It was hard to breathe,” said another. “This kind of feels like it’s gonna be another Astroworld,” said a third.
