US Vice President Kamala Harris has given her concession speech following Donald Trump’s presidential election victory.
The former prosecutor addressed a large crowd of supporters at her alma mater, Howard University, in Washington, DC.
Harris’ speech was commended by social media users, with one user claiming it was her “best speech” ever.
“Kamala Harris’ concession speech was ironically the best speech I’ve heard her give. Much different tone. Genuine passion that wasn’t seen on the campaign trail,” one user wrote.
While others believe the vice president’s speech fell flat, with one user labelling it “terrible”.
“Wow. I truly wanted to like Kamala Harris’ concession speech, as part of a great American tradition. But it was dreadful. A terrible combination of campaign platitudes and divisive talk about the “dark” days ahead. All she succeeded in doing was reminding everyone why she lost,” wrote another user.
Sky News host Rita Panahi says actor Mel Gibson has “set social media on fire” following his blistering assessment of the Democratic presidential candidate, Kamala Harris.
Mr Gibson reaffirmed his support for the Republican candidate, Donald Trump, before he gave a blistering assessment of Ms Harris when he was questioned by TMZ.
“Miserable track record – appalling track record. No policies to speak of. And she’s got the IQ of a fence post,” the actor said.
Former First Lady Hillary Clinton warns “we lose total control” if social media companies do not moderate content on their platforms.
Clinton spoke to CNN host Michael Smerconish on Saturday and admitted though steps have been taken to regulate content, more should be done.
The former first lady argued that the steps taken at a state level aren’t enough and that the federal government should do more.
“But we now know that that was an overly simple view, that if the platforms, whether it’s Facebook or Twitter/X or Instagram or TikTok, whatever they are, if they don’t moderate and monitor the content, we lose total control and it’s not just the social and psychological effects, it’s real life,” she said.
Donald Trump’s Twitter account has been permanently suspended “due to the risk of further incitement of violence”.
Tweets from the US president’s @realDonaldTrump handle have been wiped, with his account now showing the words: “Twitter suspends accounts which violate the Twitter Rules.”
The Twitter Safety account posted shortly afterwards, saying: “After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.
It comes after Mr Trump was similarly banned from Facebook and Instagram following riots at the US Capitol on Wednesday.
Twitter said two of the president’s tweets posted on Friday had violated its glorification of violence policy.
The move has outraged conservatives, who claim Twitter’s decision sets a dangerous precedent when it comes to free speech.

Sky News host Sharri Markson says the extreme censorship of the Hunter Biden story is “deeply concerning” as it has reached a point where social media giants think they can determine the accuracy of stories published by newspapers.
It comes after the New York Post released an expose detailing links between Joe Biden and his son who was paid at least $50,000 a month to sit on the board of a Ukrainian energy company who allegedly set up a meeting with the then-Vice President.
Ms Markson recently interviewed Donald Trump’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon, who revealed Joe Biden’s son emailed a shop owner who had his hard drive in an effort to get it back.
Sky News Digital Editor Jack Houghton noted the interview has four million views on the Sky News YouTube channel, and has been watched for a total of half a million hours straight.
Mr Houghton said he knew there were people who were critical of Ms Markson doing the story, “but it turns out people have voted with their eyeballs”.
“What make this story even more concerning is the fact that there has been such extreme censorship of this story by Twitter – and Facebook as well which limited its reach,” Ms Markson said.
“The point to which social media giants think they can make a determination on the accuracy of a story done by media outlets is so deeply concerning and should worry all of us.
“And they continue to censor publication of Hunter Biden’s emails, we now know these are genuine emails.
“How can a tech giant suddenly start to play editor and decide which stories that a newspaper publishes are accurate or not.”
We tweet, we like, and we share— but what are the consequences of our growing dependence on social media? As digital platforms increasingly become a lifeline to stay connected, Silicon Valley insiders reveal how social media is reprogramming civilization by exposing what’s hiding on the other side of your screen.

ABOUT THE SOCIAL DILEMMA
The world has long recognized the positive applications of social media, from its role in empowering protesters to speak out against oppression during the Arab Spring uprisings almost a decade ago, to serving an instrumental role in fighting for equity and justice today. And in 2020, during an astonishing global pandemic, social media has become our lifeline to stay in touch with loved ones, as well as proving to be an asset for mobilizing civil rights protests. However, the system that connects us also invisibly controls us. The collective lack of understanding about how these platforms actually operate has led to hidden and often harmful consequences to society—consequences that are becoming more and more evident over time, and consequences that, the subjects in The Social Dilemma suggest, are an existential threat to humanity.
The Social Dilemma is a powerful exploration of the disproportionate impact that a relatively small number of engineers in Silicon Valley have over the way we think, act, and live our lives. The film deftly tackles an underlying cause of our viral conspiracy theories, teenage mental health issues, rampant misinformation and political polarization, and makes these issues visceral, understandable, and urgent. Through a unique combination of documentary investigation and entertaining narrative drama, award-winning filmmakers Jeff Orlowski (Chasing Ice, Chasing Coral) and Larissa Rhodes (Chasing Coral) have once again exposed the invisible in a manner that is both enlightening and harrowing as they disrupt the disrupters by unveiling the hidden machinations behind everyone’s favorite social media and search platforms.
The film features compelling interviews with high-profile tech whistleblowers and innovation leaders including Tristan Harris of the Center for Humane Technology; the co-inventor of the Facebook “Like” button, Justin Rosenstein; Tim Kendall, former President of Pinterest and former Director of Monetization at Facebook; Cathy O’Neil, author of Weapons of Math Destruction; Rashida Richardson, Director of Policy at the AI Now Institute, and many others. Demonstrating how social media affects consumers on a personal level, these fascinating insider insights are seamlessly woven into a captivating narrative, including Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men), that illuminates the very real consequences these seemingly innocent technologies can have on our everyday lives.
