By-elections deliver caution for Conservatives and bad news for PPC

Four ridings held by-elections yesterday, in which the Conservatives and Liberals each held onto their two seats. Even so, the Conservatives had a tougher fight than usual to win the southwestern Ontario riding of Oxford, while the People’s Party of Canada and its leader Maxime Bernier failed to live up to their 2021 performance in Portage–Lisgar in rural Manitoba. True North’s Andrew Lawton breaks down the results and what they mean for the Conservatives and the PPC moving forward.

Also, Canada is reassessing its relationship with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank after a Canadian staffer from the bank resigned citing rampant Chinese Communist Party influence. Former finance minister Joe Oliver joins to discuss why Canada should have stayed out of the AIIB in the first place.

The future of the PPC and Bernier’s vision for Canada

Before the results came in on Election Day, True North reporter Harrison Faulkner sat down with the leader of the People’s Party of Canada Maxime Bernier to discuss some of the issues that the legacy media has failed to address during the election.

Bernier discusses the future of his party, the adoption of alternative media as a new way to reach out to his base, national unity, the Canadian Armed Forces and Bernier’s vision for Canada.

Last night, the PPC managed to triple their vote share from the 2019 election. However, they failed to gain any seats in Parliament. Going into the night, Bernier outlined that a victory for his party would be to obtain 6% of the national vote, but the current numbers indicate that the PPC fell just short with 5% of the vote.

What does Poilievre’s win mean for the PPC? (ft. Maxime Bernier)

With the Conservative Party of Canada having elected a new leader earlier this month, many have begun to speculate about the future of the People’s Party of Canada. Though their values may appear to align at times, there are still some key differences between Canada’s two major conservative parties. People’s Party leader Maxime Bernier joined True North’s Andrew Lawton to discuss Pierre Poilievre’s leadership win, his predictions for the next federal election, and why he thinks the PPC is Canada’s only true conservative party.

Canada election: PPC leader Maxime Bernier brags of “Purple Wave” even as he loses own riding

Leader of the People’s Party of Canada Maxime Bernier said on Monday that his party “made history” even as he lost his own riding of Beauce to Conservative candidate Richart Lehoux.

Bernier said there were “thousands” of Canadians tuning into his party’s rallies and slammed the country’s COVID-19 response, saying people who voted for his party “have had enough of this COVID-19 hysteria.”

Bernier won the riding for the Conservative Party in the 2006, 2008, 2011 and 2015 elections before breaking with the party and launching his own right-wing party in September 2018.

Former Calgary mayor and Global News election contributor Naheed Nenshi took particular pleasure in the People’s Party of Canada Maxime Bernier’s speech after his party failed to secure a single seat in parliament.

“He doesn’t get the purple wave – that’s me” Nenshi crowed while wagging his finger.

Nenshi said that Bernier’s speech was “delusional” for suggesting his party had a “purple wave” and added “my greatest dream is we never have to hear from Maxime Bernier again.”

Canada Election: Elizabeth May decries “deeply shocking” revelations about PPC

Speaking with reporters in Prince Edward Island on Monday, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May decried what she called the “deeply shocking” news, revealed by Global News, that former leader of a U.S. neo-Nazi group, a former Soldiers of Odin member, and a Pegida Canada official were among those whose signatures were submitted to Elections Canada last year to officially register the People’s Party of Canada.

All three of their names appear on Elections Canada documents, obtained by Global News, that confirmed a minimum of 250 party members had signed membership declarations. The forms were required to obtain party status for the PPC and its leader, Maxime Bernier.
