Social media has done wonders for celebrities who want to connect with their fans. Platforms like Instagram and Twitter have made it easy for stars to communicate directly with the people who love and admire them, but social media comes with pitfalls, too.
Yes, celebrities “like,” post, and retweet things they shouldn’t, just like the rest of us. But unlike the rest of us, millions of people bear witness to their explicit trolling or secret illegal fetishes. From Vanessa Hudgens’ insensitive COVID-19 comments on Instagram Live to Armie Hammer’s BDSM Twitter likes, here are the actors who ruined their careers on social media.

Eddie Van Halen’s death came as a shock to the world on Oct. 6, 2020. Often credited as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, Van Halen and his brother, Alex Van Halen, formed the band that would share their name in 1972. Eddie’s playing became one of the defining sounds of the late 1970s and 1980s, with the band featuring heavily on MTV and ushering a wave of big hair and hard rock to the forefront of pop music.
News of Eddie Van Halen’s death broke on social media when his son, Wolfgang Van Halen, tweeted that his father, quote, “lost his long and arduous battle with cancer.”
As the world comes to grips with the loss of a music industry titan, people are looking back on what Eddie Van Halen left behind, including a touching final post on social media.
Though Eddie Van Halen was not a particularly active social media user, he did take to Instagram and Twitter every once in a while to share good news and life updates mostly posting about his family. Eddie’s final post on both platforms was not about himself, but actually went out to his brother and bandmate, Alex Van Halen, wishing him a happy birthday on May 8, 2020.
It’s fitting that Eddie’s final message was to his brother, as the two spent their entire lives making music together, playing to sold out audiences around the world for nearly five decades.
The brothers were both born in Amsterdam, and moved to California as children, where they learned guitar and drums at the prompting of their father, who was a professional musician himself.
And the band Van Halen remained a family affair right to the end, with Eddie’s son Wolfgang joining the group in 2006 on bass while still a teenager.
Fittingly, just as Eddie’s last social media posts were a shout out to his brother, his next-to-last Instagram message was to his son.
On Mar. 16, 2020, Eddie shared a baby picture of Wolfgang, with warm wishes for his birthday. He captioned the photo,
“The Best Day Of My Life. Happy Birthday Wolf! I Love You So Much!! Your Pop ❤.”
And this birthday message for his son wasn’t just a one-time deal — Eddie made sure to take to social media year after year to guarantee the whole world knew how much he loved his son.
The father and son duo were very close, making Wolfgang’s message about his father’s death on social media that much sadder. Wolfgang wrote, in part,
“He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss.”
There was one other member of his family that Eddie Van Halen regularly posted about on social media: his beloved dog Kody. Eddie’s tiny Pomeranian was clearly the musician’s furry pride and joy. Eddie had the pup for over a decade and shared a few snippets of his life in luxury — complete with cute memes!
Kody was on hand to help his dad barbecue some hot dogs on the Fourth of July in 2017 and stick his nose up at a Thanksgiving meal that was decidedly not turkey. Kody even had his own Facebook page with more than 11,000 followers. Kody’s family frequently shares photos at home and funny anecdotes about life, keeping things light and fun despite the health struggles Eddie endured for the past several years.
In between Instagram pictures of Kody, Eddie managed to keep his social media posts upbeat and positive, spreading nothing but love around to his friends, family, and fans. His positive attitude and bright outlook on life — not to mention his immense impact on the music industry — will be greatly missed.

Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman privately fought colon cancer for four years. But even as the acclaimed actor battled for his own life, he spent his final months advocating for social justice and trying to protect front-line workers from COVID-19.
Boseman died at age 43 on August 28th, 2020, but his final social media messages capture the character of a man who served as a superhero both on and off the screen.
In a video posted to Boseman’s Instagram on April 15th, 2020, Jackie Robinson Day, many fans were shocked by the actor’s gaunt appearance. Boseman had not talked publicly about his cancer diagnosis, and he didn’t address it in that stirring video either. Instead, Boseman focused the spotlight on the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on essential workers, particularly minority communities.
Dismayed by the lack of equipment to keep essential workers safe, Boseman sought to raise awareness and funds through his friend’s charity, producer Thomas Tull’s “Operation 42” – a cause with added significance because it simultaneously paid tribute to the baseball legend Boseman brought to life in 2013’s movie 42.
But Boseman’s activism didn’t stop there.
In the weeks before his death, Boseman harnessed his A-list status to bring the Black Lives Matter movement to Hollywood. He used his social media platforms to promote BLD PWR a nonprofit for, quote, “harnessing the power of narrative activism”.
On June 19th, 2020, also known as Juneteenth, Boseman harnessed his celebrity status again, calling on everyone to, quote, “support Black owned businesses. Reach back and mentor.” He suggested organizations to support, and even though the star likely knew his future was uncertain, his social media messages promoted hope, saying,
“155 years later, let’s all try to learn from our past so we can create a better future together. Not just today. Everyday.”. Keep watching the video to see Chadwick Boseman’s final social media posts before passing away.

These viral vloggers are much more savvy about digital marketing than all their cash-for-clicks selfies may suggest. Still, they must evolve from the influencer stew from whence they spawned, or risk extinction. From Jake Paul to Lilly Singh, these social media stars need to realize they aren’t famous anymore.
In 2012, Cameron Dallas was a star on the rise. Vine was the hot new social media jam and annoying your parents with 6-second pranks was all the rage. Dallas even broadened his appeal just as the app officially shuttered in 2017 by securing lucrative modeling gigs with both Calvin Klein and Dolce & Gabbana. He was also doing the movie-star-in-the-making rounds at Los Angeles and Manhattan media events.
But that’s where the new kid hit the skids. Cameron’s exactly on-brand feature film debut was the 2014 prank flick, Expelled, which got a dismal audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with only three critics bothering to weigh in. Next came Chasing Cameron Dallas, his low-rated 2016 Netflix reality series that was canceled after just one season.
Professional troubles became personal struggles as Dallas was arrested for assault in January 2019. At the time, he claimed self-defense. Eight months later, he revealed a two-and-a-half year battle with, quote, “addiction, anxiety, depression,” and “family trauma” that included a stint in rehab. Dallas has since opened up about his vices, rebranding himself as a crooner in a series of slick-looking music videos that have not exactly taken off, no thanks to his 21.5 million Instagram followers. Keep watching to learn about more Social Media Stars Who Should Realize They Aren’t Famous Anymore!
