Standing on stage together at the federal leaders’ debate on Monday evening, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh told People’s Party of Canada Leader Maxime Bernier that he shouldn’t be there at all.
During a back-and-forth in response to a question about Bill 21, Quebec’s legislation that bans some public servants from wearing religious symbols, Bernier brought up Singh’s opposition to him being among the six leaders allowed to participate in the English-language debate.

Leader of the People’s Party of Canada Maxime Bernier said on Monday that his party “made history” even as he lost his own riding of Beauce to Conservative candidate Richart Lehoux.
Bernier said there were “thousands” of Canadians tuning into his party’s rallies and slammed the country’s COVID-19 response, saying people who voted for his party “have had enough of this COVID-19 hysteria.”
Bernier won the riding for the Conservative Party in the 2006, 2008, 2011 and 2015 elections before breaking with the party and launching his own right-wing party in September 2018.
Former Calgary mayor and Global News election contributor Naheed Nenshi took particular pleasure in the People’s Party of Canada Maxime Bernier’s speech after his party failed to secure a single seat in parliament.
“He doesn’t get the purple wave – that’s me” Nenshi crowed while wagging his finger.
Nenshi said that Bernier’s speech was “delusional” for suggesting his party had a “purple wave” and added “my greatest dream is we never have to hear from Maxime Bernier again.”

People’s Party of Canada Leader Maxime Bernier has become a rallying figure for voters who strongly object to lockdowns and other measures and while political watchers say it’s unlikely the party will win any seats, it could eat into Conservative support.
