Since I left Russia in 2022, Russia has cracked down heavily on Western social media – Instagram, Facebook, Discord were banned in Russia, and they’ve also threatened to ban YouTube. Recently Russia has sued Google for $2.5 DECILLION – an amount of money that is bigger than the entire world’s economy. Apart from trying to control Western social media giants, Russia also wants to control all influencers in the country and is currently introducing new strict rules for influencers & YouTubers. With the recent ban of Instagram and Facebook in Russia (both are now considered extremist websites, and Meta is considered an extremist organization) many people started worrying about what’s going to happen to other Western social media, including YouTube. Well, some enthusiasts in Russia decided that they’ll create Russian social media replacements. To replace Instagram we have Rossgram, and to replace YouTube we have Rutube. Let’s discuss these websites and see if they can actually replace Western social media (spoiler alert: they’re awful and no, they can’t).

For the millions still in Ukraine, especially in areas under siege, life is incredibly difficult. And the world knows their plight, thanks to social media posts from those trying to survive. Olena Ness is in Kyiv with her three children and documenting her life as a mom trying to feed her family in a war zone. Ness is one of hundreds of Ukrainian moms reporting from the thick of the battle. The “Mom News Network” has recorded more than 1,000 videos capturing devastating images of the invasion.
