Billionaire Elon Musk Says Social Media Platform “X” Hit By Major Cyberattack

Billionaire Elon Musk and the owner of the social media platform “X,” announced that the site experienced a “massive cyberattack” on March 10. Thousands of users in the UK and US reported outages, and Musk suggested that the attack could have been carried out by a large, coordinated group or even a country. Downdetector, a platform that tracks outages, recorded tens of thousands of reports from US users about technical issues. Musk also claimed that the computers involved in the attack seemed to have digital addresses linked to Ukraine, and X is still working to determine the full details of the incident.

With the recent ban of Instagram and Facebook in Russia (both are now considered extremist websites, and Meta is considered an extremist organization) many people started worrying about what’s going to happen to other Western social media, including YouTube. Well, some enthusiasts in Russia decided that they’ll create Russian social media replacements. To replace Instagram we have Rossgram, and to replace YouTube we have Rutube. Let’s discuss these websites and see if they can actually replace Western social media (spoiler alert: they’re awful and no, they can’t).

Olena Ness is in Kyiv with her three children and documenting her life as a mom trying to feed her family in a war zone. Ness is one of hundreds of Ukrainian moms reporting from the thick of the battle. The “Mom News Network” has recorded more than 1,000 videos capturing devastating images of the invasion.
