Australia will ban children under 16 from using social media, after its Senate approved the world’s strictest laws.

The ban – which will not take effect for at least 12 months – could see tech companies fined up to A$50m ($32.5m; ยฃ25.7m) if they don’t comply.

US Vice President Kamala Harris has given her concession speech following Donald Trumpโ€™s presidential election victory.

The former prosecutor addressed a large crowd of supporters at her alma mater, Howard University, in Washington, DC.

Harrisโ€™ speech was commended by social media users, with one user claiming it was her โ€œbest speechโ€ ever.

โ€œKamala Harris’ concession speech was ironically the best speech I’ve heard her give. Much different tone. Genuine passion that wasn’t seen on the campaign trail,โ€ one user wrote.

While others believe the vice presidentโ€™s speech fell flat, with one user labelling it โ€œterribleโ€.

โ€œWow. I truly wanted to like Kamala Harris’ concession speech, as part of a great American tradition. But it was dreadful. A terrible combination of campaign platitudes and divisive talk about the “dark” days ahead. All she succeeded in doing was reminding everyone why she lost,โ€ wrote another user.

Former First Lady Hillary Clinton warns โ€œwe lose total controlโ€ if social media companies do not moderate content on their platforms.

Clinton spoke to CNN host Michael Smerconish on Saturday and admitted though steps have been taken to regulate content, more should be done.

The former first lady argued that the steps taken at a state level arenโ€™t enough and that the federal government should do more.

โ€œBut we now know that that was an overly simple view, that if the platforms, whether itโ€™s Facebook or Twitter/X or Instagram or TikTok, whatever they are, if they donโ€™t moderate and monitor the content, we lose total control and itโ€™s not just the social and psychological effects, itโ€™s real life,โ€ she said.

X, formerly Twitter, has been banned in Brazil after failing to meet a deadline set by a Supreme Court judge to name a new legal representative in the country.

Alexandre de Moraes ordered the “immediate and complete suspension” of the platform until it complies with all court orders and pays existing fines.

“Free speech is the bedrock of democracy and an unelected pseudo-judge in Brazil is destroying it for political purposes,โ€ said Elon Musk, X owner.

The row began in April, with the judge ordering the suspension of dozens of X accounts for allegedly spreading disinformation.
