A Realistic Approach to SEO For Busy Solo Entrepreneurs

SEO’s tough and usually requires a big team. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to do SEO, when you’re a solo entrepreneur? Look, there is. Today I’m going to break down a realistic approach to SEO for busy solo entrepreneurs.

If you don’t have a big team or any team for that matter of fact, I want you to focus just on two things.

Number one, optimizing existing content and number two, creating new content. So let’s go over optimizing existing content first. First, use the Google search console. Google search console will show you, Hey, what content is getting impressions and which content is getting clicks and also shows your click-through rate.

And I want you to improve your click-through rate and the way you end up doing that is look at the keywords that are sitting on page two. Are those keywords in your title tag? Are they within your meta description? Is your title tag and meta-description, you know, very relevant from an appealing perspective. Think of copywriting.

The next thing I like doing is putting in the keywords that you’re seeing in Google search console within to those pages as well. So now that you just put them in your title tag and meta description, also put them within the content.

Second use Ubersuggest. Ubersuggest has a rank tracking feature that you can get started for free and you can see which ones of your keywords are getting more traction and less traction over time. It’ll tell you which keywords are getting more traction on mobile or even desktop device, or even in certain regions.

Another feature I want you to use in Ubersuggest is a content ideas report. This shows you all the other people that have content around similar keywords, like your competitors, and really make sure you there are social shares and the backlinks and the headlines that they’re using.

Third, use Google analytics. I want you to improve your dwell time. I want you to identify the content pieces that are underperforming and consolidate them with the pages that are doing well on the same topic.

Now let’s go over creating new content. First, let’s find keyword opportunities that you can rank for. Go to Ubersuggest, use a keyword ideas report, you can find in the left-hand navigation, and type in keywords related to your space.

Then I want you to go to the competitive analysis report in Ubersuggest. This is where you can put it in a competitor URL. It’ll show you their top pages by traffic show you the social shares for those pages and it’ll even show you all the keywords that the competitor’s page ranks for.

And then you can go over to their site and look at that page and be like, whoa, this is the content that they have. I can create something way better than this.

Second, let’s analyze your competitors for new keywords you want to target. You’ll see a report within Ubersuggest in the competitive analysis that just shows you all the keywords your competitors rank for.

The next feature in Ubersuggest you should check out is the SERP analysis within the keyword ideas report. And this will give you an idea of, Hey, this is how I create content that covers the whole topic.

Now that we’re going away from Ubersuggest what I want you to also focus on is writing content that is at least 50% better than everyone else who’s ranking for that keyword.

Now last but not least, I want to wrap up this video by covering a few other things that you should know. On-page SEO will produce better outcomes if you’re managing an older website. In the early days, you could pretty much solve your on-page SEO by just decreasing your load time.

And as you create new content, you want to work on your title tags, meta-description tags, heading tags, which just helps you rank. You want to have a site map.

And make sure that your robots are at TXT or your meta-tags, you’re not blocking any of the major crawlers or any pages that you shouldn’t be blocking.

And when it comes to creating content, you should be spending two to eight hours per week, depending on how competitive your niche is and how amazing your content needs to be in order to outperform your competition.

If your site’s really big, you could actually spend a lot of time on on-page SEO and it could be a daily thing. You may have people full-time focused on it.

7 SEO Secrets You Can Learn From Big Brands

Did you know that big brands replicate a very similar SEO strategy to each other? Do you want to know what it is? Today I’m going to break down seven secrets you can learn from big brands.

The ONLY Features You Need to Use in SEO Tools: https://youtu.be/uWxyKa7osh4

Social Media Marketing Tips For Every Brand (And What You Should Avoid at All Costs): https://youtu.be/FbBVrn_zaUk

Ubersuggest: https://neilpatel.com/ubersuggest/
____________________________________________

Number one, the brand itself is the main driver of SEO traffic. Keyword search value comparison, just look at this keyword, Nike, over five million searches a month versus shoes, 1.2 million, that’s just in the United States. In other words, more people are searching for Nike than they are for shoes. That’s the power of brand building. When you do things like TV advertising, radio advertising, social media advertising, content marketing, whenever you create a good product or service, that’ll help your brand progress, and that also helps your SEO.

Number two, they don’t have to build backlinks. See, most big brands will get backlinks without having to do any form of cold outreach. And all they have to really do is give PR, talk about stock earnings, release new products, they don’t really have to do much, and that’s how they’re getting backlinks.

And this leads me into my third point; they do tons and tons of PR, but it’s not for SEO, it’s for product sales. So let’s say Nike wants to release a new version of the Air Jordans, doing a big PR campaign will get that demand going so people are waiting in line and those shoes will sell out right when they come out. Same with Apple. They create all this pent up demand before they do their launch. And it just works extremely well. So PR is a really good strategy, and you should consider doing PR, there’s a lot of performance based PR agencies like PR Serve where they only charge you if they get you PR.

Number four, they invest in content at scale. You think of companies like Apple, you’re like, Neil, Apple doesn’t have much content. Even on NeilPatel.com I have thousands of pages, nowhere near Nike, or Apple, or Amazon, or any of these big guys, but over time I’ll have more and more pages, and that really helps getting more traffic assuming the pages are high in quality.

Number five, they leverage localization and translations to as many languages as possible in several international markets. Here’s the thing that people don’t tell you; SEO in English is competitive, SEO in languages like Portuguese or Hindi, or Swahili, not as competitive. So consider translating and transcribing your content because in these other regions there are buyers and people with money.

So you’re missing out on a huge chunk of traffic. NeilPattel.com you’ll see my content in German, Portuguese, Spanish, English, some even in Italian and German, and the list goes on and on. I even have certain pages in Japanese and Mandarin. I really have leveraged international translation because it brings more revenue, and more traffic.

Number six, they don’t have to do, and often don’t do as much SEO optimization. Because searchers will have their search intent mapped when they end up on the official page of their brand, Google will keep sending people their way. Their domain authority is so high that even making some mistakes, they’ll still rank high. Just think about it this way; when you go to Apple you know what you’re looking for.

You go there, you typically will buy some Airpods, or a phone, or a laptop, but the intent is there. So think about user experience and make sure that you are putting the user first and not Google first. And yes, in the short run that may not get you the rankings you want, but in the long run, it will.

Seven; they’re slow to change. Big companies are slow in decision making, it’s just how they are, and that’s okay. And with your business, you have to remember, you’re going to be faster than them, and that’s a good thing, but when big companies are slow, a lot of them, what they end up doing is, they really look at the data and they think about what changes to make.

And that really helps them because when they make changes a lot of times they’re much more calculated than startups, they’re just gun slinging and doing experiments.

Now that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do experiments, or you should move slow, it just more so means that you should look at the data just like the big companies do.

NOT Every Keyword is Worth Pursuing in SEO (Here’s Why)

Just because a keyword gets a lot of traffic, it doesn’t mean it’s worth going after. Today I’m going to break down, how not every keyword is worth pursuing an SEO and why.

RESOURCES & LINKS:
____________________________________________

Ubersuggest: https://neilpatel.com/ubersuggest/
____________________________________________

Going after keywords that are too competitive is a waste of time, specially if you have a low domain authority. Look, if you’re going after keywords like credit cards and your brand new site, your chance of ranking are slim to none, you’re going to spend all this time and effort and money to try to get there, and you’re not going to get the results anytime soon.

You’re better off going after keywords that can provide quicker results, and then once you’re getting some rankings, you’re generating some traffic, some revenue, then in the long run, you can invest after those harder terms that take longer to rank for.

Before I dive in with the tactics, I’ve got a quick stop for you. I get over 9 million visitors a month, but less than .1%, not 1%, I’m saying .1% of those visitors, ever become a customer. High volume keywords don’t mean much to go after if they don’t have the correct intent.

So how do you find out the right keywords to go after? Well, step one, go to Uber suggests. Step two, type in the keyword related to your industry. Step three, you’ll see a report that loads on Ubersuggest that just has overview on the traffic and some stars of the keyword. In the left hand navigation I want you to click on the keyword Ideas report. And when you click on the Keyword Ideas report, you’ll see a button on the very right called Keywords I Can Rank For.

If you don’t see it, that means you need a log in. It’s free to log in. And once you log in, you can put in your domain name. And when you put it in your domain name, Ubersuggest will analyze your site and show you that an appropriate list of keywords that you can target, that you actually have a shot of ranking for and the shorter timeframe versus waiting years to get rankings for.

Now filter the base on the intent of what is relevant to your proctor services that you’re selling. And what you’ll find is Ubersuggest will break down if a keyword is easy to rank for or hard to rank for. Ideally target the ones that are the easiest to rank for, because it’ll show as your difficulty score.

Even though you have a list of all the keywords that you can rank for, pick the ones that are not just the most relevant to your business, but pick the ones that have the lowest SEO difficulty score. That means you’ll be able to get the results faster. That’s what I want you to start doing.

Now the next thing I want you to do is that you go to the Site Audit Report within Ubersuggest. If you’re starting off with SEO, it’s not all about traffic, it’s all about ranking for the right keywords that drive a results in the short run so that you will have more money to invest in more long-term marketing approaches.

With the Site Audit report, put in your URL, it’ll break down all the Errors, what you need to fix, what’s the most crucial, what is more suggested and isn’t as crucial, how fast your website’s loading, load speeds are really important factor because more people are browsing your website or pretty much the internet these days off of mobile devices than they are on desktop devices.

And what’s cool with the Ubersuggest audit report is, it breaks out each and every single error in priority. What I mean by that is the ones listed at the top show you “hey, you need to fix these errors first because they’ll have the biggest impact on your rankings and track.” And then you second, third, fourth. So just knock them all down in order.

The last thing I want you to do is go create a project within Ubersuggest. So go to your dashboard, add a project, put in your URL, and put in the keywords that you want to rank for, and that you’re targeting.

You know, at the beginning, maybe not week over week or day over day, but in the long run, quarter over quarter, you’ll definitely see your rankings go up and if you fast forward a little bit, you’ll start seeing your rankings go up to page one and page two.

Sometimes the Best SEO Strategy Is To ABANDON Some Keywords

I have 9 million visitors and now I’m trying to get less traffic. Today, I want to break down how sometimes the best SEO strategy is to abandon some keywords.

Ubersuggest: https://neilpatel.com/ubersuggest/
____________________________________________

Look, neilpatel.com gets roughly eight to 9 million visitors a month. And it ranges, some months are better than others, some months I even had 10 million visitors, some months, there’s seven. Really depends on the season as well.

Now, when I look at neilpatel.com, when I first started off, I wasn’t targeting buyers, I was targeting any keyword that would get high traffic, and I just wanted as much traffic as possible. People were searching on how to make money on Instagram. You know what? Boom, I create a article on that. People want to know how to get more Instagram followers. Boom, I create a article on that. People want to know something about TikTok, even though my customers don’t care to pay me for TikTok marketing, boom, I create a article on that.

Why was I doing that? Well, the main thing is, is I thought the more traffic, the better because a lot of people wanted this traffic and people would pay money to rank for these keywords or more so pay money to get at the top of Google in the paid ads.

And what I learned from that strategy is, if the intent of those keywords doesn’t exactly match what your ideal customer is looking for, you’re getting the traffic, but you won’t make any money. So you’re probably wondering, what am I doing now, right? Well, I’m doing a few different things.

First off, I don’t care for traffic anymore. Yes, I want more traffic, but I want the right traffic. I don’t really care if I have 9 million visitors or 1,000,000 visitors. I really care about conversions and what’s driving those conversions. And I’ve been doing this for a while now.

So I want you to go into Google Analytics, set up some goals and conversion tracking, and look to see what’s driving conversions. Focus more on getting those traffic sources. That’s the first step.

The second thing I want you to do is go and look for what your competitors are paying money on paid ads for. So you can use tools like Ubersuggest and put in your competitor’s URLs. See what keywords are ranking for, see what keywords are targeting for on a paid ad perspective. And that’ll give you a big idea of, hey, these are the keywords we should be going after and these are the keywords that we shouldn’t be going after.

The third thing that I’m doing is focusing on other channels that aren’t necessarily related to keywords. If you look at the big companies out there, Microsoft, IBM, Airbnb, Nike, whatever it may be, they grow their revenue in many different ways.

The next thing that I’m doing is going after keywords that I know I can easily rank for. So if you go to Ubersuggest and you put in a keyword that you know is good, like, I’m in the marketing industry, so I may put in digital marketing, and you’ll see a report that loads and it shows your overall traffic, like, for the term digital marketing and how many people click on it.

And you put your URL in there and it’ll end up breaking out once you put your URL, all the related keywords that are good and that you can easily rank for. And I want you to look at each of those keywords, do some searches, do some research, and make sure that you’re seeing direct competitors, not somewhat competitors, but direct competitors.

And if they are, and they have a high CPC and good traffic, that means I know that that’s a good keyword for me to target in SEO because it will drive sales, which is very important.

And that’s a strategy that I would recommend, and remember, traffic isn’t everything, conversions and sales is. It all starts with tracking your conversions in things like Google Analytics, which they can do for free.

10 EASY SEO IDEAS That Will BLOW UP Your Traffic in 2021

SEO doesn’t have to be hard. There are simple ways to grow your traffic. Today, I’m going to break down 10 easy SEO ideas that’ll blow up your traffic in 2021.

Number one, combine pages around the same topics. Here’s what people don’t know. If you have two pages that are on link building and they cover pretty much the same exact thing, Google won’t know which page to rank. Sometimes if you’re lucky, you can get both of them to rank, but in many cases, they’ll go back and forth, it confuses Google. So what you’re better off doing is combining the pages, combine the content, having one more detailed page, and then you should get higher rankings.

If you don’t know which page has more authority, you can just put in your URL into Ubersuggest and then in the backlinks report, it’ll show you which one has more links and more authority.

Number two, delete underperforming pages. It’s better to have a handful of pages that drives a ton of traffic than having a site with a million pages that drive very little to no traffic.

Number three, search for the keywords that you’re trying to rank for or already rank for on Google. Look at the Google ads. If you look at the Google ads, that’ll give you ideas for your title tags. See people used to believe that if you want to rank at the top, it’s all about keywords in your title tag and your meta description.

Number four, create infographics from articles that have high social share counts. So you can use Ubersuggest. It has a content ideas report. Anytime you put a keyword into Ubersuggest, it tells you, “Hey, here’s all the traffic for this keyword,” but in the left-hand navigation, there’s this content ideas report. If you click on that, it’ll tell you all the blog posts around the web that are popular, based on social shares, search traffic, backlinks.

Number five, create video content on your top performing content pieces. Look, yes, Google is the most popular search engine, but what most people don’t know YouTube is the second most popular search engine. So take your best performing articles and create videos like I’m doing here and pop them up on YouTube.

Number six, send link juice to pages that are sitting on page two or three of the SERPs. So on Ubersuggest, you can track your rankings and it’ll show you, for your website, what keywords you’re ranking for, what page you are and what position. Look at all the ones that are on page two and page three, positions 11 through 20 or 11 through 30, and what I want you to do is see if you can link to those pages from other relevant pages within your site. That’s called internal linking.

Number seven, create “Best” related articles. Here’s what I mean by “Best” related articles. Anytime you do a search for like toaster ovens or tools, or SEO tools or credit cards, you always see like the best 10 credit cards. the best 10 toaster ovens, the best 10 toaster tools, the best 47 SEO tools, and the list goes on and on.

Number eight, implement AMP pages. So AMP is a form of accelerated mobile pages and what it does is it just makes your content load faster for mobile devices. I’ve implemented AMP on my site and what I’ve found is in the United States, in certain regions, it doesn’t really do much for my traffic, but in regions like Brazil, where I have my content translated, I found that adding AMP helped me get more traffic.

Number nine, use structured markup. This will help increase your chances of getting SERP snippets. You know whenever you search for something and then you see a little blurb at the top and Google’s just pulling from it, that’s an example of SERP snippets.

Number 10, leverage backlink opportunities on Ubersuggest. Because if someone’s willing to link to three, four of your competitors, the chances are, if you hit them up, they’ll be willing to link to you as well, versus trying to hit up all these sites that don’t link to any of your competitors, and when you hit those people up, they’re going to be like, “Hey, why do I want to link to you?

Again, if someone links to three or four of your competitors, the chances are they’ll link to you and this Ubersuggest backlinks opportunity report shows you all the opportunities for you to easily get links.

A Step-by-Step SEO Strategy For Beginners | Getting Traffic With Old and New Websites

Starting with someone who has no SEO strategy currently, let’s start there. Do you think there’s a site-wide level of optimization that has to happen? Like, straight up title tag, meta tag, optimization of different queries on the site, an internal linking structure, and then a content marketing strategy on top of that to add value to the site, as a base level SEO strategy? Or what would you suggest to someone who, first level is they don’t currently have an SEO strategy, and then we’ll ask about someone who already does, and what they can optimize, but just base level, if you don’t have one, what do you do in today’s world?

You know, you can look at keywords, top pages, et cetera. But what I wanted to show you is this is the easiest thing. So you just click on Site Audit. Again, this is free. I don’t even capture an email straight up, this is just free. So you don’t have to put in an email to use it, and it’ll tell you everything that’s wrong. Pages, your score, your load time. And you can be like, “All right, “let’s look at my Issues, or Critical Errors.” And you can just go to all of them, and be like 31 pages have a low word count.

And then you can to Warnings, and you can do the same thing. Two pages have duplicate meta descriptions. So what is it, right? So what is that, and how do I fix it?

It just breaks down everything you need to fix, in priority, from how hard is it to implement, to how much traffic will you get by fixing them? So that’s the first part of SEO, right? It’s just like the lowest hanging fruit. The second part is all about keywords.

So if I’m trying to target the keyword, marketing, and this is super effective, or digital marketing, right? And I use these tactics on my own site. To give you an idea, if I type in digital marketing, I think I’m like number one or two or something. Here’s all the paid listing, and I am the first organic listing. I do that for a lot of terms like online marketing. I’m up there somewhere. I’m number two. Funny enough, number one’s also my website. Although I sold it.

But here’s a simple thing I do. It’s all about finding the right type of keywords, right? The way I find the right type of keywords is, one, you can just type in keywords like digital marketing, or whatever you want to target. Here’s my process.

I go and I look for keywords, and I just click View All Keywords, and it’ll show me everyone who’s ranking, how many links they have, their domain scores, socials, et cetera. So I’ll go find keywords, and it gives me solid metrics. When I mean solid, as in non-opinionated metrics. Like the average webpage that ranks in the top 10 has 435 backlinks and a domain score of 49. So I know, is it going to be easy for me to get 435? Is it going to be hard? because I can have a rough idea of how many links I have.

So I’ll just go through here, and I’ll find keywords. As you can see, there’s like 500 suggestions here. Here are some other related keywords I’ll post from our database. This has 30,000 recommendations.

And then the last step when I’m trying to create content, after I find some keywords that are typically… I look for keywords that are high in volume, high in CPC, and I want to go after keywords that have a low SEO Difficulty.

So that’s abbreviation of SD. It’s like digital marketing company has a high CPC, volume’s not bad, low SEO Difficulty, which means people are typing that in, me being an agency, probably a good keyword to go after, because it probably converts well if people are paying $17 a click.

And the way you do this is you just create content. So there is a Content Ideas section of the tool, and it’ll show you all the content per country, so you can break it down by whatever country, or language, or region you want. And, technically, you can break all the reports down by that. And you want to look for articles that are somewhat popular, because it’s breaking down the social shares, as well as articles that have decent search traffic, as well as a lot of backlinks.

The Biggest Impact on SEO

Eric Schmidt the ex-CEO of Google once said, brands are the solution, they’re not the problem, right? It’s how you sort out the good companies from the cesspool. And I’m paraphrasing his quote, but you guys get the point. It’s pretty much saying brands are important and brands are a key factor in Google’s rankings.

So, I once, over time I noticed a trend, more and more people were typing in my domain name into Google. So my domain name is neilpatel.com for one of my sites where people are typing in my name, Neil Patel SEO, Neil Patel tools, Neil Patel Ubersuggest, Neil Patel content marketing, et cetera variations of my name.

And what we found is if we didn’t build links or anything, well our brand spiked from PR or whatnot, and it spiked for a month or two, all of our ranking skyrocketed. And even when the PR went down and the brand queries went down, our rankings maintained or close to maintained to their peaks. So we found that Google loves brands.

Like, we’ve seen and tested sites in different regions globally. And even if you build links, you write the right content, you’re super thorough, we found that if you don’t have brand queries, you don’t rank as high. But if you have a ton of brand queries and you barely have links or anything like that, your ranking skyrockets.

There’s an algorithm change back in 2009, that was a big brand update, I believe. And since then, bigger brands have been getting a benefit. Now, “bigger brands”. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be a bigger company, right?

You don’t have to be a Nike or Wikipedia. You just have to be a big brand for the keywords you’re trying to rank for. And you don’t have to be the biggest brand. You just have to be somewhat of a brand. Like, my brand queries suck compared to Nike I get roughly a hundred thousand visitors a month from people googling Neil Patel even though my domain name’s neilpatel.com. But yeah, I still rank well, and so does Nike but Nike probably gets a hundred thousand queries every single minute.

You do YouTube, you’re on social media, you blog, you speak at conferences, you build a brand. And you do that whether it’s personal or whether it’s corporate. and just look at how much business you got because of brand, not a lead, you have rankings and get traffic to your site, but it also helps generate business as well. And you can do that for a corporate brand, and again a personal brand, but very few people spend time and energy into it.

So I stick with the rule of seven. When someone sees your brand or hears about it seven times and interacts with it seven times they’re much more likely to become a loyal follower. Again, whether it’s personal or corporate.

So, simple things that you can do is, one, collect emails. If you collect emails, anytime you update your content, or have something new, like a YouTube video you can always blast it out. Two, you can do push notifications. So, anytime someone comes to your site, have them subscribe. Anytime you have new content or want to push out a message, let them know. Three, leverage social media all of the channels out there, because they believe that you’re not going to find someone on one channel or another, but you know, if you leverage all of them you’ll get something. It’s better than nothing. Four, engage with people.

The Easiest Way to Get More SEO Traffic

What if there was a easier way to get SEO traffic to your website than writing thousands and thousands of articles? Today I’m going to break down the easiest way to get SEO traffic.

Ubersuggest: https://neilpatel.com/ubersuggest/

As you can see on my screen here, I’m logged into my Google Search Console. And I want to show you something really interesting. If I click the NEW button so I can filter more, I can go to Search appearance, then click on Videos. This is going to show me how much traffic I’m getting from things like videos, right, because I filtered down.

So over the years, I figure that, hey, I need to stop producing just content to get quote-unquote traffic. I need to get more relevant traffic because I don’t really help people with Instagram marketing from a business standpoint, but my ad agency NP Digital does help with things like SEO tools or growth hacking.

So we started focusing on videos that don’t just bring traffic, but bring quote-unquote our ideal customer. Nonetheless, as you can see here, I’ve gotten quite a bit of clicks from Google just from video SEO.

And I also have Ubersuggest, so that helps with that. “How to Track and Improve Your Rankings.” Again, doesn’t have the volume that, let’s say, Instagram followers has, but it can bring the ideal customers. That can help me generate more sales and more revenue for my ad agency.

But the key is I don’t just publish my content on YouTube. I’m also publishing it on my own website, and it’s driving a lot of traffic. I have content on WordPress, daily SEO tasks. I even have reels that I’ve been testing on YouTube, or shorts as they would call it on YouTube. Instagram’s more reels. And I just produce tons of video content each and every single week. And I don’t really do much to optimize it, right? I’m using all the code.

I’m just making sure how’s my site, how’s all the schema markup, stuff like that. Lets Google know what type of content I’m using. But the point I’m trying to make is just go and create video content and publish it on your blog. It’s not that competitive.

You can rank for a lot of stuff because what Google’s doing is they’re including it in the results, so not only do you have a chance of ranking for text, but, hey, there’s not as many people creating videos, so it’s not as competitive. And what I would recommend that you do is do your keyword research. So if you go to app.neilpatel.com, and you’re just like, “All right, I’m in the digital marketing space.”

So you can go load up the Ubersuggest tool, which you can find at app.neilpatel.com, and you can type in keywords related to anything. So I can type in digital marketing. And once you type in keywords like this, you’ll see the search volume.

Don’t worry about the SEO difficulty or the CPC. Typically, though, the higher the CPC, the more lucrative that term is going to be. And go create content all these popular terms. You can even create a video on digital marketing agency, digital marketing jobs, digital marketing company.

So in essence, what you want to do is you want to view all the keyword ideas, continually find more and more keywords that have good volume and high CPC. So digital marketing agency, way higher CPC than a lot of the other keywords here, which is great.

And once you find the keywords that you like, you can just keep track of ’em. So I would add agency, company, digital marketing company, let’s see, services, strategy, courses. I would add those to a list.

So in Ubersuggest, you can add it to a list. And I can create a list. Let’s go create a new one. So I can create one on YouTube video ideas. I click plus. And now those keywords are going to be added to this keyword list than I can get in the left-hand navigation side.

So then I can keep track of all the keywords that I need to go and create a YouTube video on. And if you just leverage this simple strategy over time, you can keep getting more and more traffic.

So it’s not just about going after volume. You want to go after volume with high CPCs that are related to your business. And don’t forget the related to your business part because if you do that, then you’ll get the views of the right audience and convert them into customers.

My Biggest SEO Mistake (And Why Your Organic Traffic Might Be Garbage)

Over the last 12 months I’ve driven 58.6 million visitors from Google. You will look at my traffic sets, you look at this graph and you’re like, wow, Neil you must be doing really well at SEO. And you know what you’re doing, but you know what? That’s not really the case. Today I’m going to break down my biggest SEO mistakes.

Ubersuggest: https://neilpatel.com/ubersuggest/
____________________________________________

As you can see here, 58.6 million visitors from SEO. That’s a lot of traffic to not have to pay for. And if I scroll down and I look at the traffic stats, coming from terms like Ubersugget which is fine. My name, Ubersuggest, affiliate marketing, my name, variation Ubersuggest.

But if I just keep going further down the list you’ll start seeing a lot of keywords that, aren’t really relevant to my business. And a lot of the key words of what I was optimizing for as you can see here, it was just pure volume. And I was getting a lot of traffic, but as you can see now my traffic starting to drop, why? Because my team, you know, at my ad agency we track leads and I can’t show you our leads in Salesforce because we track it all due to people’s personal information like their records or the company URLs.

But when we were tracking our sales through Salesforce of what’s driving clients for NP Digital , and typically people will click on let’s talk and submit a form or contact.

So we have two options to become a lead. And what we found is, most of these keywords droves, little to no leads. Now, if you go to neilpatel.com, I get my traffic typically from blogging, right? I can see here on the blog. And if you look at my content, I’m going after keywords that are very specific. Customer reviews in video ads.

So if I type in customer reviews video ads. The search volume, isn’t high. If you look here zero monthly searches, right? People aren’t really searching for a lot of these keywords but you know what?

We found that people who are interested in putting customer reviews in video ads or images, and they’re trying to figure this out are interested in conversion rate optimization which is one of the services we offer.

So the content that we’re producing on our blog is much more niche. How to create a free Google website for a business. This for us, this post is target local businesses because our SMB division helps localized businesses. How to create unique gift guides for e-commerce content.

And I spent so many years building up my traffic and it wasn’t until I got the traffic.

Look, the big lesson from this is, don’t optimize for traffic optimize for revenue. If your keywords aren’t generating you revenue, move on to new keywords. And when you’re doing keyword research, don’t make the mistake I did. Don’t just optimize for quote-unquote traffic. What I want you to do is type in keywords.

So don’t optimize just for traffic, optimize for traffic from the right audience. And before you go after keywords do your keyword research, type them into Ubersuggest, figure out what keywords have high volume and traffic while you’re technically they mean the same thing but also high CPC. And of course it’s related to your business.

So don’t just optimize for quote-unquote keywords and traffic optimize for relevancy. And if you do that, you’re going to be better. And if you need help with this check out my ad agency, NP Digital or if you just have questions, leave a comment below.
