Look, I’ve been around the block a few times. I’ve been marketing for a while, and email campaigns have long been a helpful strategy for me. But this email strategy did NOT work – and here’s how you can avoid falling into the same trap.

Email marketing is super effective. As they say, “The money is in the list.” I routinely send out emails with an average open rate of over 30%, which is amazing by industry standards. And, the average ROI for email campaign, well, it’s pretty spectacular. The average return is $36 for every dollar spent, and it can go way higher than that if you’re doing everything correctly. And if you’re doing things poorly, you’re not really going to see any ROI at all.

But that’s why you’re watching this video, because we’re going to make sure you’re doing things right. So what’s the biggest mistake? This is the one that I see almost every single time that just really crushes an email strategy. It’s not scrubbing your list. Okay. Think of it this way. You got an email list. Doesn’t matter if you have a hundred people on your email list or a million. You got a list. You send them emails. Some people naturally want to open your emails, some people don’t. Do you know what happens if you keep sending emails to the portion of your list that doesn’t want to open up the emails?

Well, let me give you a real-life example. So, when I first started email marketing, I ended up growing my list to a little bit more than 28,000 contacts. And this is with one of my earlier blogs. And the blog was also on marketing, it was called “QuickSprout.” When I was at 28,000 emails, my open rate went from 20 plus percent to down to 15%, and it started going all the way down to 10%. I was like, “Why? I’m continually getting new subscribers.”

See, Outlook and Gmail, and other email platforms, they have their own algorithms, and what they do is, let’s say if I’m sending an email to a thousand people. If a hundred of them don’t ever open up my email, but there’s 900 that sometimes do open up my emails, eventually those hundred people who aren’t opening up the emails, it actually taints the other 900.

Here’s what I mean. Even though they’re not connected, the way the algorithm works is, “Oh, you keep sending these “emails to these hundred people who don’t want them.” So your email’s more likely to be spam. So even though those other 900 people were engaging every once in a while, some of those emails that you sent to those 900 people will end up in their spam box or their promotions tab, even if they didn’t click the spam button or the promotion button. In other words, you need to make sure that you’re only sending emails to people who are engaging, or else the people who do want your emails, in a lot of cases, they won’t see your emails. And not only will your open rates go down, but, your overall clicks and opens will go down from the total number.

Because when you scrub your list, you’re deleting the records of the people who never engage. In theory, that causes your open rates to go up. But more importantly, it’s not just a percentage. You want the total number of opens and the total number of clicks, of people clicking on the email to go to your website, to increase even if your list size is smaller. So what you need to do is constantly scrub your list. Different email tools have different ways of doing this. I use ConvertKit. So in ConvertKit, for example, it’ll segment out, in a rolling 30 days, all the cold subscribers. “Cold” means people who haven’t engaged in the last 30 days. So what do I do with those people? I delete them.

Now, some people like putting them on a re-engagement campaign, where you only send out emails to those cold subscribers and try to get them to re-engage, maybe send them an irresistible offer.

You would want to do a re-engagement campaign to those cold people, send them something irresistible, and then for the ones that are still cold and don’t care, delete those. For the others that started to reengage, put them back into your main list. That’s how you ensure that you keep getting amazing opens, amazing clicks, and your emails get delivered to people’s inboxes. That’s how you succeed with email marketing.

Email marketing secrets, here’s what’s working in 2022. In the marketing world, there is a virtual ATM. You know those machines that you go to and take out money? You put in a card, put in your pin, and cha-ching, you’re getting money out of your bank account. But on the internet, your email list is considered an ATM. Every time you need more income, all you have to do is send out an email. And I didn’t come up with this concept.

Tip number one, scrub your list. This is how I get my open rates above 30%. When you keep sending emails to people and they don’t open it up, what do you think Gmail and Hotmail do? They put it in the spam box. Even if the person hasn’t clicked spam, they put it in the spam box. So to avoid your emails going to the spam box like when I send you an email, you’re reading them, you’re getting them.

Tip number two, use casual subject lines. It usually increases open rates by 12% from my test. In other words, if someone was really proper with their subject lines.

Tip three, use your email list to get followers on your social platforms. This will help with the rule of seven. See in marketing, there’s something called the rule of seven. When someone sees or interacts with your brand seven times, they’re much more likely to evangelize you. It helps you build that brand and just helps you grow. By doing this, you’ll get more followers on all your networks, more engagement. You’ll continually be in front of people and you can continually promote to them.

Tip number four, follow up when people add stuff to their cart, but don’t complete. This usually reduces abandonment cart rates by up to 18% by one simple email for example, “Hey John, I noticed you added this toilet paper. “It’s almost out of stock, there’s only two more. “Check it out.” Probably doesn’t work as well with toilet paper but it could work with t-shirts or scooters or bikes or whatever you’re selling.

Tip five, keep your emails short and to the point. We found that short emails that are under 200 words tend to have a higher click-through rate by seven to 38%. That’s a massive difference. So instead of having really long emails, keep them short and to the point.

Tip six, send your emails early in the mornings. We found that when you send your emails around 6 a.m. for the time zone that your subscribers are in, you have a better chance of having your emails opened up because when they wake up and check their email inbox, you’ll be at the top versus being at the bottom. If you’re at the bottom, they go through a lot of at the top and then they don’t keep going and then they’re done. So send them out early in your time zone. We usually find that 6 a.m. works the best.

Tip seven, add value even when you are selling, it just creates better customers. There’s a site called Legion Athletics. And what Legion is, it’s a fitness supplement brand. They generate a lot of their revenue through emails, more than 10%. And the way they do this is they don’t just sell you protein powder or supplements, they also show you how to best use them, the best workout routines and how you can get fit, better and healthier all while taking their products.

Tip eight, resend to unopens. This typically adds an extra 8% to your open rate. I do this all the time. If I send out a hundred thousand emails and only 25,000 or 30,000 open them, I know that I can get roughly another 8,000 to open up the emails if I resend to all the unopens and I change the subject line. The key is change the subject line. If you don’t change the subject line, it doesn’t work as well.

Tip nine, add countdown timers within your emails. And I’ve seen this increase sales by roughly 19% the last few times that I did it. Now you only want to do this when you’re selling something and it’s a promo and it actually is running out.

So I wouldn’t put a countdown timer in my email if the promo lasts forever, but if the promo lasts for 24 hours, I would add that countdown timer to the email because it works.

Here are the 7 steps covered in this video:

Step 1: Choose an email marketing software. There are lots of options here. The most well known is Mailchimp, especially for beginners. For me, Mailchimp is very difficult to use, especially for a beginner. We recommend using ConvertKit because it’s super user friendly and of your ability to segment your audience and send automated email sequences. ConvertKit now has a free plan that allows you to send emails to up to 500 subscribers and have access to unlimited forms and landing pages.

Step 2: Create something to give away / choose an offer. Decide what to give away to get people to sign up for your email list. Here are 5 formats for giving away free information:
1: Host a Webinar.
2: Create a free video course or training.
3. Create a free email course. This is a course delivered via an automated email sequence.
4: Create a guide or eBook.
5. Create a checklist.
Step 3: Start getting sign-ups. Decide where to get sign-ups for your offers:
There are 4 main places to get sign-ups for your email list.
1. Forms on your website – These can be placed on your home page, in the footer of all pages on your website, or embedded within content such as blog posts.
2. Landing pages – Landing pages are one-page websites that focus on a specific offer.
3. Pop-ups – an offer that pops up while viewing a website asking you to sign up with your email and either receive free information or a discount on the product or service.
4. Announcement bars – the bar at the top or bottom of a website announcing a particular offer. It will either ask you to sign up to receive an offer or will direct you to a specific page of their website.

Step 4: Generate traffic. How are you going to get people to your offer?
1. YouTube
2. Social media
3. Ads
4. SEO
Pocasts

Step 5: Segment your audience. It’s important to create segments so you can send emails to the people most interested in a particular offer.

Step 6: Broadcast messages. What information of value would you send to the audience on a periodic basis? Send out an email newsletter on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis with helpful information.

Step 7: Create automated email sequences. Email marketing automation is a more advanced step but one of the most valuable. By sending out a series of automated messages over time you can provide value to an email subscriber over time, build trust, and slowly sell to them in an automated way.
