Social media isn’t bad: you’re just using it wrong | Eva Amin | TEDxCherryCreekWomen

Social media is commonly maligned because of its potential negative impacts on mental and social health. In this talk, youth activist and seasoned public speaker Eva Amin argues that social media in and of itself is not the problem. In fact, social media can support personal fulfillment and professional success – if used judiciously. Eva presents guidelines every kid and teen should be taught from an early age to help them leverage social media as a helpful resource and avoid allowing it to be a destructive force. Eva, a senior in high school, has been a public speaker since the 4th grade. She recently ranked 11th in the nation for public speaking with the Future Business Leaders of America. She loves public speaking because of the platform it gives her for inspiring others. In her talks and in her daily life, she challenges others to look at things from a fresh perspective and to question the status quo. Eva is especially passionate about amplifying the voices of women and youth. She hosts a podcast called Venom, in which she interviews women in power positions with the goal of inspiring young women to break through barriers. Socially Silent: my relationship with social media | Siena Wescott-Toi | TEDxYouth@Haileybury

Social media is about balance. Whilst it helps people from around the globe communicate it also creates and is creating a society that strives for the same thing, perfection, an artificial happiness, whilst being unhealthily addicting. I describe my journey with social media and how I became socially silent, teaching me many things about the world around me and about myself, most notably how to communicate with myself. I describe my step-by-step thought process, and what caused me to feel this way but also the benefits of not being on social media. Whilst I describe social media as not being an asset to my mental health and my self-confidence, I also speak about the benefits of social media to society, and how I harnessed those benefits to rekindle my relationship with social media. But my central message is to the viewer, to experience what I experienced and to understand how it can be hugely beneficial to their physical and mental well-being; something that is more important in this day and age than ever before. Pupil at Haileybury UK. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
