A Minimalist’s Approach to SEO: The Only 3 Things You Should do Every Week To Get Traffic

There are over 200 factors in Google’s algorithm. Wouldn’t it be great if you could rank higher on Google without learning each of those factors? Today I’m going to break down a minimalist approach to SEO. The only three things you should do every week to get traffic.

If you’re overwhelmed and don’t have lots of time to invest, it’s important to know where to focus your efforts. Sure, it would be great to do everything, but that’s not always realistic. And instead of doing everything that you read online about SEO, let’s see the activities that will produce the most impact on your business.

So number one, optimizing existing content. Now optimizing existing content is all about finding new keywords, sitting on page two and three and optimizing for them. What you also want to end up doing is going to Google Search Console, and then looking to see which pages are getting the most impressions, but the least amount of clicks. And within there, you want to click on those pages and look to see which keywords are getting a lot of impressions that are on page two or bottom of page one that you may not be talking about too much within your content. And then what you want to do is update the content to include those keywords. You may also want to include those keywords within your title tag and your meta description.

The next thing when it comes to updating content is deleting your underperforming content. See, just because you write content and you generate a lot of links to it, it doesn’t mean that it’s a good piece of content. It doesn’t mean that it’s going to rank. It doesn’t mean that it’s going to get social shares. Just some content, even though people link to it, they just don’t care to read about it. And that’s the harsh reality of content marketing.

The next thing when it comes to updating content is consolidating content.

When we’re also talking about updating content, I also want to discuss refreshing content that brings traffic to your website. There’s a lot of content that is already doing well and is generating traffic on your site. But what you’ll find is when you log to Google Search Console, some of these articles will drop in traffic over time, or they’ll continually rise. Also, if your article’s continually doing well, what are the cures that are driving you this increase in traffic? What could you do to even make it more related to those cures and better so that way you can get even more traffic?

Now, the next tactic that I want you to focus on is doing competitive analysis to guide your content efforts. Here’s what I mean by this, right? So we already discussed updating content. Now, when we’re talking about competitive analysis.

So what I want you to do is head over to Ubersuggest, and I want you to type in your domain. Now, when you type in your domain, you’ll get a report of your top pages, your traffic, the keywords you’re ranking for, but you’ll also see in the left hand navigation, an option to look at competing domains. So you want to end up looking at all the other sites that are similar to you. And what this Ubersuggest report does is it shows you all the similar keywords that you rank for, that other people also rank for. And it also shows you the keyword gaps.

This report breaks down their most popular pages from top to bottom. It shows you who’s linking to them and it shows you those keywords that each of those top pages are ranking for. This will also give you new content ideas in case you don’t cover any of the topics that they’re generating a lot of traffic for that you’re not generating any traffic for. And this will give you ideas of what type of content to create.

Now let’s talk about creating new content. Content clusters around keywords that your website has the potential to rank for. That’s what I mean. So if you go back to Ubersuggest, you type in a keyword, let’s say I go after SEO. In Ubersuggest in the keyword ideas report, there’s actually an option where you can actually put in your domain name and it’ll adjust the keywords that you have the ability to rank for.

So once you put in your domain name, Ubersuggest will then filter the results. So you want keywords you can rank for that are going to be much easier and those are the ones that you should start creating content around and create content clusters.

My 4 Favorite SEO Tools (And The Ones That Are a Time Waste)

There are one to many SEO tools. It can be overwhelming. So today I’m going to break down my favorite four. Today I’m going to break down my four favorite SEO tools and the ones that are a time-waste.

Ubersuggest: https://neilpatel.com/ubersuggest/
Click Flow: https://www.clickflow.com/
Google: https://www.google.com/
Google trends: https://trends.google.com/trends/

____________________________________________

Number one, of course, Ubersuggest is one of my own tools. What I really love the most in Ubersuggest there’s a few features and I’m going to break them down, is whenever you’re doing keyword research in the keyword ideas report, you can click on this button, page one, ranking potential, and you put in your URL and it’ll tell you all the keywords that you can rank page one on, based on your domain authority, your on page SEO, how long your site’s been around.

So it’ll tell you what you actually have a shot to rank for right now. Right? And that’s great because SEO is a long game, but who doesn’t want to see more short-term results. The other feature that I really love in Ubersuggest is the competitor analysis. I can put in my domain name and my competitor’s domain name.

And it’ll show me all the keywords that they rank for the I don’t rank for. And it’ll also show me all the keywords that you know, I’m ranking for, that they’re also ranking for. And then you want to check out what are the keywords that they’re ranking for that you’re not even targeting because that’s a keyword gap. That’s your opportunities.

Another feature that I love in Ubersuggest is the back links opportunity report. And if someone’s linking to three of my competitors, you know that if they linked to three of my competitors, they don’t mind linking to other websites in my space. So if I take the time and hit them up, there’s a great chance that they’ll link back to me.

The next tool I like is Click Flow. It’s used to test your title tags and your meta description. This is great because a lot of times you can boost your rankings, not by building more links, but just getting more clicks. If everyone does a Google search for a keyword like dog shoes and they click on the second result, instead of the first result, it tells Google that no one wants a first result. They prefer the second result and they’ll switch the rankings.

The next tool I like, Google search console. It’s free. You can discover keywords that you need to double down on. Here’s what I mean by that. Go to Google search console, see the pages that are getting traffic.

Look for the keywords that you’re ranking for the bottom of page one, on page two, page three. And see if you’re using those keywords within your content. If not, if those keywords are relevant, integrate them, it’ll boost your rankings for those terms, helps you double down and you should see results within 30 days.

Of course, one of my last favorite tools is Google trends. It allows you to explore new opportunities and find a lot of great keywords and categories to go after, especially what’s trending. And what’s going on an upward trend versus a downward trend because you want to go after more keywords and terms that are on an upward trend.

As for a time-waste, you know, when you look at very technical SEO auditing tools, there’s a lot of them out there. It’s only worth it if you have huge websites with thousands of images, complex internal linking structures, unless you have a critical technical SEO problem.

Most of the time, you won’t need to be running lots of crazy in depth audits. You can do a lot for free within just the Ubersuggest, auto report. Now think about the ROI of your efforts. What’s working best in your SEO. Don’t spend time and money on all the tools and activities that aren’t really yielding those results. But for most of your day-to-day stuff, you’re not going to be using those features. You’re just going to be paying for stuff that you don’t use.

So instead, I want you to focus on what’s driving your ROI. Go look in your Google analytics, go look at what’s driving the conversions, your goals, what content, what channels. Focus more on that than wasting your time looking at 20 tools.

It’s not just about the cost. Cost isn’t the issue of the tools. The real issue with using too many tools is it’s a big time suck. If you spent your time on what’s generating your ROI, you’ll make more money.

The ONLY Features You Need to Use in SEO Tools

Are you getting overwhelmed with your SEO reports and all the tools? There are so many out there. Well, don’t worry. You’re not alone. Today, I’m going to break down the only features you need to use in SEO tools.Don’t get bogged down by reports and features and tools. That do very little to actually get you more rankings. I’m going to break down four main features and reports that you need to rank higher. And here’s best of all, you can do pretty much all of this in Ubersuggest.

RESOURCES & LINKS:
____________________________________________
Ubersuggest: https://neilpatel.com/ubersuggest/
____________________________________________

You can find it in neilpatel.com/ubersuggest, or just go to ubersuggest.com. And you can do literally most of this stuff for free in Ubersuggest. That’s what’s great. So in that sense, we’ll go down the four main features you need to use and how you can do it for free.

So, let’s dive right in. Number one, Rank Tracking, Look, on Google, if you don’t know what your rankings are, if they’re going up or if they’re going down, or how things are improving or declining, how are you going to improve? Those things are really important, right? Be here’s the thing with SEO, it’s a long game.

And Rank Tracking shows you that, and it can track your rankings on a daily basis and a weekly basis, whatever you prefer. And you can even track your rankings on mobile devices and desktop. You can do the all in Ubersuggest for free. And what’s cool about that is that way you can see how you’re performing on different device types. And it tells you when you’re doing SEO, what’s working and what isn’t.

The second thing that you need to look at with these SEO tools is Competitive Analysis. Competitive Analysis tells you what your competitors are doing and what’s working for them. Look, you don’t want to recreate the wheel. You want to do what’s working for others, and just do it better. Why start from scratch?

And what’s cool is, you can see the keywords by clicking on the Keywords button and you’ll see all the keywords that that page ranked for. And that’ll tell you, hey, should I also create a page that’s very similar. Well, if I do, now I know what keywords to go after because it’s related to my business and it can also drive me sales.

And another cool feature is you can also see all the backlinks that are driven to that page. All the other sites that are link into your competitor’s page. Because here’s the thing, if someone wants to link to your competitor, they’re probably willing to link to you too.

So now, you got a list of links going to your competitors. So, you can create a better page than that’s more thorough, go after all their keywords, and you can also hit up all the people linking to them and ask them to link to you too.

The other cool thing that I like about the Competitive Analysis report on Ubersuggest, you can see how much traffic your competitors getting. If they’re getting more traffic month over month or less traffic month over month, because Google is doing so many updates.

The third report that you need to look at and feature within these SEO tools is Keyword Ideas. Now, the Keyword Ideas report in Ubersuggest gives you all these ideas that you can go after.

So, you want to go after popular keywords. And what’s cool about the Ubersuggest Keyword Ideas report, you can actually filter it by some any region, such as United States or Canada, or UK, or India, or Brazil, or even South Korea.

And within the Keyword Ideas report in Ubersuggest, there’s also a Content Ideas report. What that’ll show you all the content that you can write about that are related to those keywords. So, you can see what’s popular on Facebook, what’s popular on Pinterest, what’s popular from the backlinks perspective, and what’s even popular from an organic SEO perspective.

The last factor, and this is number four, is Backlinks. If you don’t get people linking to you, you’re not going to do well. Backlinks are like votes.

So, you want to get ideally bigger sites linking to you and more relevant sites. And you can use the Backlinks report within Ubersuggest. And what’s cool is they have a Backlink Opportunity report more specifically, where you can put in your URL and then your competitor URLs. And it’ll show you all the people that linked to your competitors, but don’t link to you.

Because if someone links to not just one but two, three, four of your competitors and they don’t link to you, the chances are they don’t mind linking to other people in your space because they’re already linked to lots of your competitors.

Is It Too Late to Start Doing SEO in 2021? (You May Not Like The Answer 😬)

People say SEO is dead, but we all know that isn’t the case because it drives so much revenue. The real question is, is it too saturated? Today I’m going to break down if it’s too late to start doing SEO in 2021. You’re probably not going to like the answer.

RESOURCES & LINKS:
____________________________________________
Ubersuggest: https://neilpatel.com/ubersuggest/
____________________________________________

The answer is yes and no, it is too late. And it is also not too late to start SEO and I’ll break down why I’m saying yes and no.

So the first part, why is it to late? Well, all the companies with billions of dollars in budget are already doing SEO and they’ve been doing it for a long time. We see the majority of the large corporations out there, so it makes it really competitive. And when you look at most niches, there are very dominated by really high authority websites. And you’re seeing that these bigger and bigger sites are taking up massive amounts of ranking, even if their site doesn’t focus on a specific niche.

A conversion funnel is a way or path that you guide people to get them to convert, a great example of conversion funnels that works is click funnels, it’s a software and they have examples of all the funnels out there that work for different industries. So check it out, it’ll at least give you ideas whether you use a product or not.

So from that aspect, SEO, saturate, it still works. It’s saturated. Now it doesn’t mean SEO doesn’t work. It just means you have to be patient and give it more time. It’s still one of the highest ROI channels out there.

The second thing is topic clusters really are the key strategy visas when it comes to content marketing. A great example of this is if I’m talking about SEO, I would break down everything related to SEO, from link building to on-page SEO, to Google core web vitals of page speed.

And even though page speed isn’t necessarily a keyword that you would assume should they test you, it is because it’s a factor within SEO. That’s what I mean by topic clusters, check out the beginner’s guide to SEO by Moz.

And if I were to do SEO today, I would start off with the keyword ideas report with an Ubersuggest. So if you go to Uber says typing a keyword related to your industry. And once you type a keyword to your industry, you’ll see this report. It’ll show you your traffic for that keyword, how many people search for it on mobile or desktop devices.

And then the left hand navigation, you’ll see this option called keyword ideas, click on that. And when you click on that, you’ll see this report of all these keywords from ones from Google suggest for related keywords or question related to keywords that you could potentially rank for that could be good.

Now remember how I said earlier that SEO is saturated and it’s more competitive. Well, if you’re logged into Ubersuggest, if not, just sign in, there’s this option that says keywords I can rank for that’s on this exact report. If you click that and you put in your domain, it’ll filter all the keyword ideas on that report and show you which ones are most relevant for you that are good fit that you can rank for.

Now, I want you to filter them based on the attack what’s relevant for your product or service that you’re selling, by doing that, you’re then focusing your SEO efforts on ones that are easy to rank for based on how new or old your site is, based on how many backlinks you already have, Ubersays, we’ll figure all that out for you and do the equation and come up with the right keywords that you should rank for, but you need to make sure you pick the ones that have the best opportunities.

Is SEO Really Working For You?

You spent all this time doing SEO, but how do you know if it’s really working out? Today I’m going to break down if SEO is working for you.

RESOURCES & LINKS:
____________________________________________
Ubersuggest: https://neilpatel.com/ubersuggest/
____________________________________________

Now, it’s obvious you’re already starting to rank high on page one, you’re getting more traffic and you’re getting more sales, but there’s this weird honeymoon period when you’re doing SEO, the first two, three months, sometimes even six months, you’re not getting the results you want, and you’re putting all this time, effort and money into SEO, and the question is, “Should you continually be spending that money? Is it really worth it?” And there’s a specific way you can see if SEO is working for you.

So first off, I want you to head to Ubersuggest neilpatel.com/ubersuggest, you can type in your domain name, like I’m typing in neilpatel here, and you’ll see Ubersuggest load.

Now, if you have a brand new site, you may not see a graph like this. If you do see a graph, your ideal goal is for it to be going up and to the right. That’s the first leading indicator that SEO is working for you. If it’s flat, doesn’t mean all hope is lost. If it’s going down, again doesn’t mean all hope is lost. There’s ways to reverse that, but more so you want to figure out if SEO is working for you and the he easiest way is to first see if the graph is going up and to the right.

The second thing that you can end up doing to see if SEO is working for you is I want you to click on the dashboard link on the left side of Ubersuggest. If it requests you to log in, make sure you go and log in, and I want you to click on new project or create a project. You put it in a URL. So I’m going to end up putting in one of my company websites, Np Digital, and then click next, type in the cities that you’re going after. For me, I’m going after United States, and click next.

The next thing you’re going to want to do is put in your keywords. So, as you can see here, it’ll give you a list of recommended keywords. If you’re a brand new website, you may not have that. So, I’m going to type in keywords like SEO, that I may be targeting. I’m going to type in keywords like marketing, SEO company, and then the next thing I’m going to do on the next page is going to say track my competitors. Some of these may be your competitors, some of them may not. It’s pulling based on common keywords.

Now this project is brand new, so let me go over to the Neil Patel project. All you have to do is on your dashboard, click see more, under tracked keywords, and you can see your rankings over time. You may see a gray box like this, if you’re doing just, if you just started, because you won’t have too many results when it comes to rank tracking.

If you have been doing it for awhile you can change your date range, like I do last month, and you can see Marketplace Facebook, and the keyword I may be tracking is LinkedIn, and you can see if it’s going up or down over time. That’ll give you a good idea if SEO is working for you. And you can continually add keywords, like I can add the keyword, SEO company.

I can add another keyword like SEO, and then I just click start tracking my rankings, and it’ll take a bit, because Ubersuggest says has to crawl, but as Ubersuggest crawls, you’ll end up being able to quickly see, all right, what am I rankings? And as you can see is pretty quickly here, right? SEO, that’s my rankings for it. SEO company.

Even though your traffic’s not going up, if your rankings are going up, that’s a good leading indicator that SEO is working for you. So that’s how I judge if SEO is working. Once you’re getting the traffic, then I look at conversion rates, but for now I recommend creating a project in Ubersuggest, tracking the main keywords that you’re going after, so that way you can see leading indicators of SEO is working for you.

Keep in mind, if you’re not raking in the top hundred, you’ll just see a little dash, a little line like that.

If you’re ranking in the top hundred, you’ll see a number, and the more greens you see over time, the better off, and I recommend you daily rank tracking because, as I mentioned, Google does on average over eight algorithm changes per day, even though most of them are small. It’ll give you a better understanding of what is happening.

Introduction to SEO and Why It’s Important – SEO Unlocked – Free SEO Course with Neil Patel

This is the second lesson of my free SEO course called SEO Unlocked. Today I’m going to be going over SEO and why it’s important. Did you know that 93% of online experiences start with a search engine? You may think, “All right, there are these search engines out there.” “Yeah, sure we know Google.” But for a minute, just think about how many times you go on Google or search, or YouTube and search, or Kayak and look for hotels or flights, there are search engines all around us and we’re constantly using them. Before we get started into going over SEO, there are a few things I wanted to cover: There’s a lot of people saying false information out there, so I wanted to play a little fun little game called Fact or Fiction.

Google Page Speed Insights: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/
____________________________________________

The first one: My industry is too hard to get ranked in.
Second one: Only big companies can do well on Google. Then I always hear, the more pages I have, the better.

Now let’s go over all five of them.

The first one: It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in, you can always rank on Google.

Now, of course, creating an account on Google Search Console and submitting your sitemap isn’t a bad thing to do. And you don’t need to spend a ton of money to win online, and that’s why I started to get into SEO.

There are three main keys that you really need to understand if you want to win online.

The first is, why is SEO so important? Look, SEO’s a process of optimizing any given search word, or term, for a search engine on your site. So no matter what time of the day or what country people are in, when they’re searching, you can be found, you’re getting that traffic, and some of it will end up converting into sales.

The next key to winning online is choosing your battleground. They dominate search on all landscapes. So when you look at the desktop, they’re an estimated 4.5 billion active internet users, and Google’s search share for desktop is 87%. That’s roughly 8.7 out of 10! That’s an amazing result.

And just being on there isn’t enough. Your position is everything! Over 31.7% of people click on position one, according to Advanced Web Ranking.

The third key, which is unlocking the SEO factors to win online.

One thing that you can do is go to Ubersuggest, click on the Site Audit Report in the left-hand navigation, once you’re there, and look at your website, and it’ll breakdown the factors that Google is looking at.

You’re probably wondering, “Hey Neil, this is all great, “but what’s the Holy Grail of SEO?” “What’s that silver bullet?” Well there’s not really a silver bullet. It’s a lot of little things that add up, and I’m going to go over them.

One of them is Page Speed. For every second delay means roughly 7% reduction in conversions, according to HubSpot. So you want to make sure your site loads fast.

The next thing I want you to look at is Mobile User Experience. Look, the number of people that are using mobile devices is continually going up. So much so that Google has a mobile-first index.

The next factor that I want you to look at is Topical Content. The more detail that you go into on each page around the same topic, the better you’re going to end up ranking. Versus if you go really broad and cover a lot of random topics, but you don’t go in-depth on all of them.

Another factor and this is from Ahrefs, it’s all about URL Length. The longer your URL length, the lower your rankings are. So you want to keep your URL short and to the point.

Another thing to look at is Content Length. Generally speaking, the longer your content, the more social shares you’re going to end up getting, the better you’re going to end up doing.

Backlinks are another big factor. And as you can see from this chart by Ahrefs, backlinks have more of an impact on your rankings than On-page SEO; that’s getting sites to link to you, it’s super important.

And one thing that very few SEO’s looks at is the power of brand and user signals. The ex-CEO of Google once said, “Brands are the solution, not the problem.” “Brands are how you sort out the cesspool.”

These days security is a big issue as well, so you want to make sure you’re using an SSL Certificate, so that way you get that HTTPS. Because when people go to your website and you’re not using SSL, you’re more likely to get a warning.

21 Point On-Page SEO Checklist (Rank #1 In 2020)

New on-page SEO checklist for 2020! In this video, I’m giving you the perfect 21 point on-page SEO checklist for 2020.

Things have really changed this year, and I think the biggest changes are yet to come. This video will take you through a step-by-step process to prepare the perfect strategy for the new year.

Here’s what we’ll cover in the on-page SEO checklist:

►Search + intent. This is one of the biggest changes we’ve seen in SEO. It’s no longer just about keywords and queries; it’s all about intent.
►Make sure that the keywords you select and the content you create is better than what’s ranking #1 in the search results.
►General on-page optimization still matters. Continue to pay attention to titles, descriptions, H1s and H2s, images, etc.
►Generate reviews to add fresh content your site and better your brand’s reputation.
►Enable comments (but keep a close eye on them!)
►Add FAQs to increase conversion rates.
►And if you do at FAQs, make sure they’re 100% up-to-date.
►Emphasize your E-A-T (expertise, authority, trust). This is now a huge part of Google’s algorithm, so make sure you take the necessary steps.
►Create content hubs around your most important terms.
►Use schema on your pages. Recommended schema includes organizational, FAQ, review, and local.
►Pay attention to your page speed (and taking steps to increase it if necessary).
►Use Google’s Mobile Testing Tool to make sure your site translates well to mobile.
►If you use Ajax or Javascript, run a Fetch as Googlebot to make sure that the page validates.
►Run a Server Header Checker to make sure it’s returning a 200 OK.
►Do a robots.txt test to make sure your pages aren’t blocked.
►Check the code for res canonicals or noindex to make sure the right pages are ranking.
►Search for your content online to see if anyone has stolen it.
►Check for manual actions inside Google Search Console.
►Check the URL Removal Tool in Google Search Console to make sure you page can still rank inside of Google.
►Set up reporting using tools like SEMRush and Google Analytics.
►Don’t forget to monitor spammy links!
