Facebook, Twitter, TikTok & Co: Die meisten können sich ein Leben ohne Social Media wohl kaum noch vorstellen. Einerseits können gesellschaftliche und politische Debatten online einfacher losgetreten und soziale Ungerechtigkeiten durch Bewegungen wie #MeToo und #BlackLivesMatter adressiert werden. Andererseits finden wir im Netz Hasskommentare und Radikalisierungen bestimmter Gruppen. Hinzu kommt, dass die Logik der Algorithmen für die Nutzer*innen oft nicht nachvollziehbar ist. Falschinformationen werden meist tausendfach geteilt, bevor sie von den Plattformen entfernt werden – wenn dies überhaupt passiert.
“Die sozialen Medien sind eine reale Bedrohung unserer Demokratie”, sagen die einen. So wie es gerade läuft, schadeten die Plattformen uns mehr, als dass sie uns nützen. “Nee, Social Media ist eher demokratiefördernd”, entgegnet die andere Seite. Online fänden Stimmen ein Gehör, die in der realen Welt oftmals ungehört blieben.
Bei 13 Fragen diskutieren wir, ob die sozialen Medien unsere Demokratie zerstören und welche Maßnahmen in Zukunft wichtig sein könnten, um das Netz zu einem demokratischeren Ort zu machen.

On Thursday, February 17, Jonathan Haidt and Robby Soave had an Oxford-style debate on the role of government regarding social media before a capacity crowd at the Sheen Center in downtown Manhattan. It was hosted by the Soho Forum, a monthly debate series sponsored by Reason. Soho Forum Director Gene Epstein served as moderator.
Haidt, professor of ethical leadership at New York University and co-founder of Heterodox Academy, defended the debate resolution, “The federal government should increase its efforts to reduce the harms caused by social media.”
Haidt, author of a recent article in The Atlantic on social media’s harm to mental health, pointed out that while the platforms were not initially designed for people under 18, those individuals have arguably been its victims. Haidt likened the platforms to sugar—best taken in moderation.

Jaron Lanier is considered one of the fathers of virtual reality and a veteran of silicon valley.
In his book ‘Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now’, Lanier contends that sites like Facebook and Twitter are dopamine farms that are reprogramming how you think and feel. He says they’re also causing political instability, and are changing the global economy for the worse.
The Twitter board has agreed to sell the company to Elon Musk in a $44bn deal. Musk, who is the world’s richest man with a net worth of $266.8bn according to Forbes, put in a bid to buy the social media site for $43bn on 14 April.
The offer was initially rebuffed by Twitter, but after Musk confirmed a funding package, the takeover was announced on Monday (25 April).
“I hope that even my worst critics remain on Twitter, because that is what free speech means,” Musk tweeted.
Dave Rubin of “The Rubin Report” talks about the Elon Musk Twitter poll that has created a lot of speculation about his next move. Elon Musk tweeted that when Twitter undermines free speech with its social media censorship it is actually undermining democracy. He then left a mysterious clue by simply saying “Is a new platform needed?” Is he planning to launch a competitor or buy Twitter and restructure it? Dave also does a special “ask me anything” question-and-answer session on a wide-ranging host of topics, answering questions from the Rubin Report Locals community.
